Welcome to The Sunshine Club (an affiliate of TEMI NPO)

In 2003, Helene J. Uchida started teaching English to oncologists at Kyushu Cancer Center and became interested in teaching English as a volunteer after hearing one student, a pediatric oncologist, talk about his young patients.

In 2004, Uchida started volunteering in the pediatric ward of Kyushu Cancer Center and initiated a Christmas party for the children. She christened her volunteer activity “The Sunshine Club” because she wants to bring sunshine to the children and help them forget that they are sick during her visits.

Thanks to the support of the community, the Sunshine Club has expanded its English class program and Christmas visits to include four Fukuoka hospitals: Kyushu Cancer Center. Kyushu University Hospital, Fukuoka University Hospital and Children’s Hospital.

Sunshine Club Mission Statement

To bring sunshine and smiles to hospitalized children in Fukuoka, thanks to our volunteers, through fun English (as a foreign language) activities, picture book readings in Japanese and visits from Santa and his helpers bearing Christmas gifts during the holiday season.

Our goal is to help children “forget” that they are sick when we visit and let parents and grandparents know that we care.

Thank you to our Sunshine Club sponsors
